The Kansas City Chiefs play their games in Kansas City, Missouri, about 10 minutes from downtown. They have played at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972. In 2009, Arrowhead Stadium underwent a large remodeling project and is again one of the best outdoor stadiums in the world. In 2014 the fans set the world record for crowd noise in an open air stadium at 142.2 decibels.
During the 2016-2019 seasons the Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC West title and competed in the playoffs, losing home games to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, and the New England Patriots 37-31 in over-time in the first AFC Championship Game hosted at Arrowhead Stadium on January 20th, 2019. On January 19th, 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Tennessee Titans, 35-24, to win their first AFC Championship and won it at Arrowhead Stadium. This set them up for Super Bowl LIV on February 2nd, 2020 against the
San Francisco 49ers. The game did not disappoint as the teams traded scores early and went to halftime tied at 10-10. The second half started with 49ers dominance and mistakes by Kansas City, but the Chiefs owned the final quarter scoring 21 points and sealing the victory 31-20. Patrick Mahomes II, the Chiefs star quarterback, was named Super Bowl MVP.
In 2017, the team traded up in the first round of the draft for Patrick Mahomes II from Texas Tech to be their next generation quarterback. He did not disappoint. In just his second season, he took the starter spot from veteran Alex Smith, who the team traded to the Washington Redskins, and went on to lead the team to the AFC Championship Game and was voted the league MVP as only the second player in NFL History to throw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. In the 2019 NFL Pro Bowl, Mahomes was also named the game MVP. He wasn't done collecting hardware as he was also nominated for two Espy's, NFL Player of the Year, and Male Athlete of the Year. He won the NFL Player of the Year, while being edged out in Male Athlete of the Year. In his third season, he won Super Bowl LIV and was the game's MVP.
In 2020, the Chiefs are poised as Super Bowl odds favorites as the defending champion, a star quarterback in Patrick Mahomes II, future hall of famer Andy Reid at head coach, and the leagues most explosive offense.
